Breast cancer linked to non-organic foods

This  Fresh Air show from December 14th discusses, among other things, the link between non-organic, mass-produced foods and breast cancer.  A major cause in the increase of breast cancer since the early 1900’s can be linked to pesticides, hormones in meats, and other sources of hormone-mimicking substances in our food supply.  These substances are especially harmful when girls are going through puberty.  This is yet another reason why organic foods are so important, not only for fertility issues, but for women’s (and men’s) health in general.  Here’s the link to the show’s audio:

BPA in receipts

More information has recently come out about the hormone-mimicking chemical bisphenol-A (BPA).  BPA is found in canned food linings, certain plastic packaging, plastic water bottles and other sources.

This chemical has been found in significant quantities in receipt paper from certain manufacturers.  One producer, Appleton, has produced BPA-free receipt paper since 2006, and is producing their paper with red flecks embedded on the back so it can easily be identified.  Look for this during this holiday season and mention to the stores you visit that you’d like to see them change to BPA-free receipt paper, not only for their customers, but also for the cashiers handing over receipts all day!  (We’re working on it at NHFC!)

BPA has been shown to contribute to infertility, sperm abnormalities, and has been shown to damage a child’s reproductive system while in utero.

Men – how to avoid everyday toxins for healthy sperm

Guys- here are some easy ways to reduce the effects of some common toxin exposures.

Basically, men should:

  • Reduce or eliminate SSRI antidepressants
  • Eliminate exposure to BPA (receipts, canned food liners, plastics)
  • Reduce or eliminate exposure to Phtalates – change soaps, replace vinyl shower liner, and other sources)
  • Eat organic produce to eliminate sperm-killing pesticide residues
  • In the winter season, avoid using heated car seats.  Sperm production works best when the scrotum is at a lower temperature than the rest of the body.
  • Eat wild-sourced salmon, to avoid PCBs.  Check out Seafood Watch and MN Dept of Health’s info on safe fish consumption for more information.

Herbal immunity boost – a tasty way for the whole family to fight colds and flu!

We’ve already been seeing a number of common cold cases here at NHFC, even with the relatively warm weather we’ve been having so far this fall.  I think with fall activities ramping up and with school beginning again, cold viruses are beginning their return.

Since fighting colds are such a big part of trying to stay healthy in the winter months, we are offering a tasty addition to soups and stews that can help build your immunity to help fight colds and flu.  Five herbs are combined in this herbal immunity mix to support qi and blood, one way of helping to build immunity in Chinese medical theory.  Each package is $4.50 plus tax, and is enough for one recipe of chicken soup (or other soup recipe).

Stress reduces fertility…

Here is a link to a recent New York times article finally confirming what many alternative/complementary healthcare practitioners have known for a long time: stress can negatively affect fertility.

Dr. Paul Magarelli, MD, PhD, talks about acupuncture for infertility

Here is a link to an interview that ABORM Advisory Board member Dr. Paul Magarelli, MD, PhD, had at a Vancouver, CA radio station on Septemebr 25, 2010.  He discusses the possible mechanisms behind how acupuncture improves IVF pregnancies, live births and reduces miscarriages, twins and ectopic pregnancies when acupuncture is used for 4 weeks before an IVF and on the day of embryo transfer.  Dr. Magarelli also discusses male factor and how some studies have shown acupuncture and Chinese herbs can improve morpholgy (shape of sperm), count and motility. Thanks to Lorne at Acubalance for the heads up!

Naturopathic Earthquake Victim Relief Clinic in Haiti benefit

Happy Hour for Haiti – a big success!

For those of you who I wasn’t able to inform beforehand, Chloe with Adagio Holistic Therapies did a great job at spearheading this little benefit for the Naturopathic Earthquake Victim Relief Clinic in Haiti.

The goal of $500 to purchase essential oils and natural healing supplies for the clinic was reached, but there is always more opportunity to donate whatever you can to this worthy cause.  See this link to the Naturopathic Earthquake Victim Relief Clinic in Haiti for more information on the ongoing work for earthquake victims in Haiti.
